Two Weeks In

Two weeks in and I’m having a blast.  I’ve been busy with orientation at school, learning about how things work at Cebu International School, (CIS).  There are 13 of us new hires and it is a friendly, lively group, mostly Americans with a few Canadians, one German, a couple of Brits, and Elaine from China, teaching Mandarin.
I’ve also settled into my new home, pictures below.  It is in a gated community, Dona Rita Village, about half way between the school and town.  My home is big with three bedrooms and four bathrooms, and a small patio for Susie.  There is an air conditioner is each bedroom and hot water in each bathroom.  Not all bathrooms have hot water.  It is mostly furnished, with beds and a couch and table,  but I’ve done a lot of shopping for the basics, pots, dishes, salt, dish towels, etc. etc.

I’ve tried lots of local food since the school has furnished lunch each day during orientation. They also hosted us at a traditional restaurant and the superintendent had us to his home for a buffet. They is an expression here, it isn’t a party without lechon, (a whole suckling pig) not my favorite. I’ve enjoyed the local fish, lapu lapu, I’ve tasted a wide variety of lumpia too. The local mall has everything from McDonalds to Starbucks to shwarma and tacos. My new favorite is a desert called halo halo. The people have been awesome. They smile a lot, like me. They are very helpful and most speak English. The weather has been hot and humid of course. I wonder if I will ever stop sweating! I’ve taken Jeepneys, tricycles and lots of taxis, considering getting a car. Will keep you posted. Today, Sunday, 6 of us hired a driver to take us around. We visited Magellan’s Cross, the Taoist Temple, the Carbon Market and I finally got to the water! We took a ride along the coast. Back to work tomorrow, with the kids coming Thursday. Missing you, thinking of you.

I'm here!

I'm here, alive and well.  After a grueling trip, with cancelations and missed connections, I'm here!
The typhoon, Glenda, canceled my flight and then of course my connection, so I arrived at 2am on Thursday, July 17th.  I was sleep deprived and jet lagged but warmly welcomed at the guest house of the Sagolili's.  It is a delightful place to stay and they are delightful people. Here is the view from my room.

I had to make arrangements for Susie and me, since hotels in Cebu do not take dogs. I searched Air BnB and  Nelson and Imelda Sagolili  took a chance on us
I've enjoyed getting around so far.  I've taken taxis, jeepneys and tricycles.
I had my first Thai massage today, the cost of $5.00 and one of the best massages I've had.  Also had a manicure for $2.00 (85 Philippine pesos)
I report to school tomorrow.  Still don't have a place to live, but I've narrowed it down and will probably make a decision tomorrow.
My biggest apprehension was the heat and humidity and I seem to be holding up okay.  I take more than one shower a day, but I don't find it awful.
I'm enjoying myself so far.  More to come!

Cebu International School, here I come!

I've mailed my signed contract to Cebu International School.  I'll be leaving, July 14, 2014,  for a two year stay in Cebu.  I'm excited to get my chance to explore Asia!  I wanted a base, to dip my toes or put my big feet into, China, Japan and other spots.  I've wanted to visit the Philippines since I taught in Vallejo.  I learned a lot about it with the kids.  I get to see Palawan Island and the Chocolate Hills.
My position will be half time ESL teacher and half time librarian, at a school with 350 students.

File:Ph locator region 7.pngMy plan is to find a lovely place for me and Susie Q to live.  We will explore Cebu and the Philippines and learn the ins and outs, We will discover the good places to go and great restaurants.
Then you come and visit.  The first week is Cebu, you recover from jet lag.  Then we plan an excursion, Hong Kong?  Manilla? Bangkok?  Phuket?

Think about it!

See you in Cebu?  You are welcome!

The reaction to my decision has been interesting! Some encouraging, some incredulous.

Greg sent me the youtube of Buddy Hacket doing his Philipino bit on the Johnny Carson show.  It is funny!
